History
Moore Intermediate School- The Original History
Moore Intermediate School was located at 1101 Cheraw Drive in Florence, South Carolina, in an older, well established residential area in the western part of the city. Moore’s original building was constructed in the mid 1950’s. There were 21 classrooms, a library, a large gymnasium, cafeteria and auditorium. In the 1970’s, a spacious new media center was moved upstairs when 6 classrooms were added on the second floor. In the 1980’s, an additional 12 classrooms and 4 restrooms were constructed in a wing behind the gymnasium, creating a courtyard in the middle of the school building.
Over the years, Moore has been a junior high school (grades 7-9) and a middle school (grades 7 and 8). In the school year 1994-1995, Moore Middle School was replaced by a new, larger school, Henry Sneed Middle School, and Moore became an intermediate school for grades 5 and 6. That year, 756 students and teachers from 3 overcrowded elementary schools (Briggs, Royall, and Savannah Grove) were rezoned to the newly created Moore Intermediate School.
Administrators, teachers, parents, and community volunteers were instrumental in preparing the former junior/middle school into bright, clean, and appealing classrooms and grounds for elementary students. Students voted on the school colors, a mascot, and playground equipment. Parents made suggestions, were involved in meetings, and provided manual labor (scrubbing, painting, making curtains, etc.) before the move took place. From the beginning, parent and community involvement were critical.
In the second year, Moore had 768 students as the sixth grade graduated and a new fifth grade entered. After two years, the Justice Department’s mandated rezoning of elementary schools in Florence created a change in the student population again.
After two rezonings (1982 and 1996), Moore had a population of 816 students in grades 5 and 6, coming from nine different elementary schools. The majority of students came mostly from three elementary schools: Carver, Delmae, and McLaurin. This combination of students from three separate and different elementary schools presented a “starting over” for the second time in the school’s three-year history.
In 2013, Moore opened a brand new school off of Hoffmeyer Road. In the 2021-2022 school year, with middle school grade configuration happening across Florence 1 Schools, Moore once again became a middle school, this time with students in 6th-8th grade.

It is with deep humility and great excitement that I introduce myself as the principal of Moore Middle School. Moore Middle has stood as a beacon of excellence in the West Florence community, cultivating academic achievement, character development, and meaningful opportunities for all students.
My goal is to enhance every student's academic and personal growth, equipping them to thrive in middle school, high school, and beyond. With experience in both middle and high school settings, I believe wholeheartedly in developing young individuals who are not only intelligent and independent thinkers but also compassionate and community-minded. Our work at Moore Middle will be rooted in intentionality, collaboration, and a shared dedication to student success.
I want to assure you that my commitment extends beyond students—it includes our remarkable faculty and staff, our supportive families, and the broader community. I strongly believe in the power of partnership. As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child,” and I welcome your ideas, voices, and engagement in this critical work.

Hello and Welcome to JWM Middle School!
Having served Florence One Schools for the past twenty-seven years, primarily as an administrator, I am pleased to continue my service as the 6th-grade administrator for JWM 6th Grade Academy.
My earliest years of service in Florence One School began at Timrod Elementary School as a 6th grade teacher; my core subject was math. After several years there and earning a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina, I became the assistant principal at Greenwood Elementary School. My time there provided many fulfilling years, creating fond memories and fostering lifelong friendships with parents, families, and staff.
As I continue in service here at Moore Middle School, I look forward to all that the year holds for our rising Moore Lions as they transition from elementary to middle school! I’ve been asked the question before, “What do you enjoy most about being an educator?” As the years pass, I find that my response remains the same. My greatest joy is nurturing students and watching them grow and mature socially, emotionally and academically! I look forward to the same this year!
Mr. Steven Samuel: 7th Grade Assistant Principal
Mr. Steven Samuel
Welcome to 7th Grade! I’m looking forward to a great year of learning, growth, and partnership. This is an important time in a student’s journey, and I’m here to support a smooth transition, consistent structure, and a strong school-to-home connection throughout the year.
I currently serve as the Assistant Principal. My background is in middle-level education, and I hold a Master’s degree in Educational Administration. My focus is on maintaining a safe, orderly, and supportive environment where students can grow academically and personally.
I believe in setting clear expectations, being consistent, and working closely with teachers, staff, and families to ensure student success. I also value strong communication and structure—two things I believe every school community needs to thrive.

Hello and welcome to 8th grade!
I am a native of Columbia, SC, graduating from Richland Northeast High School earning distinctions from the Horizons Honors Magnet Program and the Palmetto Center for the Arts Vocal Magnet Program. My capstone project was the evolution of Black Gospel Music. In addition to being vocalist, I am a trained classical pianist. I use my musical talents at my home church of Second Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia as well as other Columbia-area churches.
I graduated from Winthrop University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education in 2014. I am certified in early childhood and elementary education. In addition, I am certified mentor and administrator in the state of South Carolina. In 2014, I began my teaching career in Richland School District Two at Bethel-Hanberry Elementary School in Blythewood, SC where I led several grade level and curriculum teams.
As an educator, my passion is using data to inform and improve instruction. I enjoy sharing data to help students gain confidence in their abilities and keep track of their accomplishments. I also enjoy the challenge of making difficult and abstract concepts easier to understand.

Curriculum-Technology Coordinator - Carson Kleinknecht
Dr. Carson Kleinknecht
My roots are firmly planted in Florence 1 Schools, having graduated from West Florence High School. I then pursued my passion for education at Francis Marion University, playing softball while earning my degree in Early Childhood Education. My commitment to growth led me to Coastal Carolina University for a master’s in Instructional Technology, where I also gained a certification in online teaching and training. Most recently, I completed my PhD in Curriculum and Instruction at Liberty University.
A significant part of my professional journey has been dedicated to teacher wellness, researching teacher burnout and its impact on retention. My hands-on experience in the classroom includes six years teaching first grade, followed by three years as a STEM teacher for grades 1st-5th.
I am thrilled to begin my first year as the Curriculum Coordinator at Moore Middle School. This role aligns perfectly with my lifelong desire to lead and guide others in their educational journey—a yearning that stems from the simple excitement of seeing students’ eyes light up with understanding and the profound trust built when they feel safe to learn and grow, even through mistakes. I am excited about supporting our dedicated teachers and fostering an enriching learning environment for all our students, providing whatever assistance is needed to help them succeed.

Lee Price
I was born in Roxbury Massachusetts and lived blocks away from New Edition. We moved to SC in the early 80's which landed me in Lamar where I graduated in 1989. I played 2 years of College Football but my career was cut short by an injury. I have coached and mentored hundreds of kids with six of them making it to the pros. I joined F1S in 2012 as a class assistant and varsity basketball assistant coach at South Florence. During my tenure here in F1S I have coached football at Southside and Sneed. I was also the first boys basketball coach here at Moore and currently entering my 4th year as an ISS Monitor.

STEAM Coach - Valerie Woodward
STEAM Coach - Valerie Woodward
I am excited to be the new STEAM Coach at Moore. This will be my 14th year as a Moore Lion and my 20th year in Education. I have taught 5th-12th grade science and have been a STEAM teacher for the last 9 years. I am from Sumter, SC. I stayed close to home and got a Bachelor's of Science degree in Biology from Francis Marion University and then continued on to Coastal Carolina to get my Masters of Art in Teaching. After completing my M.A.T. I continued my education getting certified in Gifted and Talented.
I believe it is imperative to have the STEAM program in schools. STEAM allows students to
step out of their comfort zone, try new things, provide new opportunities, and teaches them a
whole new way to interact with the classroom material they might not get otherwise.
I can't wait to start this new school year and see all the wonderful things that are in store for
Moore!
